How virtual environments are changing the landscape for construction
According to a recent survey*, 65.3% of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) professionals predict the next big trend within the industry will be Virtual Reality (VR).
VR takes Building Information Management (BIM) or CAD drawings and converts them into virtual environments using gaming technology. Software and hardware advancements have resulted in big improvements in the technology, which today delivers authentic, walk-through experiences. These virtual environments give designers, architects, engineers, contractors and clients opportunities to connect, discuss and collaborate on projects visually, simplifying the communications process and improving feedback.
The virtual environment delivers full visualization of a building before construction begins, which allows testing of many important factors, including viability of the design and architecture. By refining the design and build process, efficiencies are made, reducing both the time and costs involved in actual build changes.
Of those who completed the AEC survey, 64% believe this type of technology will be in common use within the next 5 – 10 years, which is not unattainable. At CMO’s recent visit to Ecobuild, our team tried out some of the latest VR technology developed by Soluis Group, who have produced virtual environments since 2000 and are now working in partnership with leading industry innovators. VR will help to deliver a better understanding of construction sites and building spaces, creating more robust buildings in less time and this can only result in higher levels of customer satisfaction and positive PR for the AEC industry.
